Robert Half`s Salary Guide uses employer and employee data to present projected starting salaries and employment trends for more than 500 positions in finance and accounting, technology, marketing and creativity, administration and customer support. law, health care and human resources. Biglaw has no official definition, but vaguely refers to the country`s largest law firms by the number of employees, small firms that pay at market prices, or medium-sized companies with an international reach. Most major law firms are located in major U.S. cities. Lawyers working at Biglaw are typically paid on the Cravath scale, a system of employee compensation based on the number of years outside law school and paid to New York lawyers working at Cravath. Not only are all lawyers paid the same on this salary scale, but they can generally expect to receive the same market premium each year. Respondents at all levels who attended one of the top 100 law schools had higher total compensation. Total compensation was on average 25% higher for general counsel, 19% higher for managing counsel and 12% higher for senior counsel when the respondent obtained a Doctor of Laws degree from one of the top 100 law schools. Respondents who attended one of the top 100 law schools and already had experience at an Am Law 200 law firm or higher had 15% higher total compensation than respondents with the same law firm experience who did not attend a Top 100 law school.
Biglaw bonuses from 1999 to today are included in the table above. The table doesn`t include internship bonus amounts, as I haven`t compiled this information yet (but send an email if you want to see it). Median total compensation increased by 21% across all sectors and positions starting in 2020. Total compensation from 2020 to 2021 reflects a recovery and a net increase of 10% compared to 2019. Base pay increased by 9%, bonuses by 37% and LTI by 100%.
